Bollywood star Salman Khan’s box office charm does not seem to be working this time around with Kabir Khan’s Tubelight that hit theatres on Friday. While the film made an opening collection of Rs 21.15 crore, the day two earnings were Rs 21.17 crore.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted Sunday morning, “#Tubelight Fri 21.15 cr, Sat 21.17 cr. Total: ₹ 42.32 cr. India biz.”

While these numbers sound huge in isolation, but given Salman’s history at the ticket windows, the film’s budget (an estimated Rs1 billion) and the number of screens it released in (approximately 4350 screens in India alone); Rs 42.32 crore is quite a disappointing figure for two days’ collection.

Chinese star Zhu Zhu made her Bollywood debut with Tubelight.

Last Year, Sultan made an opening collection of Rs 36.54 crore while Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) collected Rs 27.25 crore on the first day of its release. Both Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan saw rise in collections on the second day, earning Rs 37.2 crore and Rs 36.6 crore respectively.

According to boxofficeindia, Tubelight made Rs 6.6 crore on Thursday in the middle east circle. The Kabir Khan directorial edged past Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees which minted around Rs 20.42 crore on Day One, but that film released in 3400 screens compared to 4400 of Tubelight. The day two collection of Raees was Rs 26.3 crore and Tubelight has fell just short of defeating the SRK film at the BO on day two itself.

Tubelight, also featuring Salman’s brother Sohail, child actor Matin Rey Tangu and Chinese actress Zhu Zhu, is set against the backdrop of the India -China war of 1962. It released on Friday.
