Item Description: Hutchinson of London, London, 1961. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hutchinson & Co. London, 1961. One of the great war novels. First edition in English, translated by Xan Fielding. Jean Larteguy's classic account of a group of French paratroop officers captured by the Viet Minh, and the saga that follows. Gripping and suspenseful, the novel has reportedly been read by Allied commanders involved in wars from Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, and elsewhere. As American involvement in the Vietnam War increased, it was studied by American officers and Special Forces soldiers. The book regained currency with the onset of the Global War on Terrorism and the insurgency phase of the Iraq War. Since then, it has often been quoted or analyzed in works on counter-insurgency. This is a Near Fine copy, red boards with gilt lettering on the spine, top and side edges very slightly soiled, text block firm, pages unmarked. Jacket condition is Near Fine, unchipped with cover illustration bright and totally intact, front lower leaf price-clipped but the "21" in the "21s" price is still visible. First British Edition. The author served with the men who were the inspiration for this book. Rare. Bookseller Inventory # 170406

After their release they return to France but are dissatisfied with their old environment. With the beginning of the Nationalist rebellion in Algeria, they re-enlist. This band of red-beret brothers see themselves in the historical role of Roman Centurions, facing the barbarians, while behind them corruption, in the form of their compatriots, attempts to deceive and betray them."
